Reynolds Hall History
Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts officially opened on March 10, 2012, after the $470 million project launched just a few years prior. David M. Schwarz selected the Neo Art Deco design style to echo the Hoover Dam, just 30 miles southeast of downtown Las Vegas. The Smith Center also draws inspiration from the Fort Worth Will Rogers Memorial Center.
Before The Smith Center came to be, Las Vegas was one of only a few large cities in the U.S. without its own major performing arts center. People initially began conceiving plans for a new center back in 1994, and in 2005, the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation donated $150 million toward the efforts, ranking as the second-largest performing arts donation in U.S. history. The Smith Center was ultimately named after the chairman of the Reynolds Foundation and his wife, Fred and Mary Smith, as they were the largest contributors, and their donation finally pushed the project forward.
Once constructed, Reynolds Hall became the first Gold LEED-certified performing arts center in the United States, paving the way for more sustainable and environmentally friendly venues to follow in its footsteps. Since its opening day, Reynolds Hall has hosted many major artists and performers, including Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Boz Scaggs, Johnny Mathis, Sarah Brightman, Puscifer, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Bernadette Peters, Renée Fleming, Paul Anka, and more. Every year, Reynolds Hall continues to put on Tony-award-winning productions, including Les Misérables, Hello, Dolly!, Hamilton, and Dear Evan Hansen.
