The Lion King narrates the coming-of-age story of a little lion cub named Simba, who is next in line to become the King of the Pride Lands following his father. The African safari however is no stranger to political machinations, as even in this innocent and easygoing musical, disaster comes when Simba's father and King is killed because of the actions of his wicked uncle Scar, who plans to usurp the throne of the Pride Lands. The fledgling cub chooses to escape the Pride Lands and goes into hiding for much of his early childhood. In his time away, he meets new friends, Timon and Pumbaa, who encourage him to forget his past and live life on his own terms. the young prince's relaxed demeanor then takes a turn when Simba once again encounters his childhood confidant Nala, who encourages him to return to the Pride Lands and requests him to save the people of his land.

This complicated plot of heartbreak, strong bonds, and fearless leadership is intensified by the familiar classic songs, written by Elton John and Tim Rice. Their original compositions, partnered with additional songs and lyrics from big names like Zimmer, Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, and director Julie Taymor have contributed to the immense success of the musical not just in Broadway, but also in Europe and Asia performances.

The original stage adaptation began on July 8, 1997, at the Orpheum theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The musical was received so well by fans and set a standard for contemporary theater, ushering in its shift and premiere in Broadway, New York on October 15, 1997.
