The saga of The Lion King is set in motion in a fictional region of the African savanna; living in The Pride Lands, the little heir Simba leads a free and easy life, before betrayal occurs because of the deeds of his evil uncle Scar and his impulse to overthrow Simba's father, Mufasa, and become King himself. The first half's sequence of events leads to Simba's exile from his rightful place and the tale of his eventual return to retake his throne and his place as King.

The 1997 Broadway play, since its formation, had to develop extensive research on real African society and historical texts given its content. The narrative itself is actually taken from historical African leaders and actual events – Simba as an example is the animal version of Sundiata Mansa, the founder of the Malian Empire who was appropriately referred to The Lion of Mali.

Julie Taymor, the first female director in the history of Broadway to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical, completed in-depth research on African and East Asian history, especially design, which resulted in a faultless staging of the musical. The regalia alone are perfect representations of several traditional people in Africa, an example of which is Simba’s garb in the show which is actually inspired by Kenyan Maasi soldiers' outfits. Just like the previous 1994 movie, the iconic musical compositions written by Elton John and Tim Rice stays respectful to its African inspiration, with the live adaptation even putting in songs with lyrics that are performed either in part or entirely in African languages like Swahili and Zulu. Also, the African motif is also noticeable in dance numbers, with several of the numbers presenting the seamlessness of Bali-inspired movements.

The 3D puppetry, song composition, and lifelike stage design all work in harmony to carry out an second to none musical.
