& Juliet – Musical at Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center

When compared to the previous known story of the Shakespearean play which was shown live on stage approximately four hundred years prior, critics have noted the many alterations which were implemented to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly more modern show based on the same lead character. Shakespeare’s original narrative revolves around the tragedy that comes about because of rash decision-making and the insatiable passion of two lovers, which results in the poisoning of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragedy and instead embraces a more positive outlook by concentrating on the boundless possibilities of life, even after such tragic experiences.

This messaging is evident in the new showl’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her group of friends, who journey to Paris and discover their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist flip through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes command of her husband’s account and alters the ending of his well-known classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a second opportunity to shine, while adding new and equally strong women to the cast. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the production is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent years, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the women throughout the musical. Even the clothing worn by the musical’s women give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while emphasizing the contrast between the ongoing musical and the previous classic by contrasting Elizabethan costumes and iconography with today’s fashion styles. Each aspect of the show was carefully thought-out to celebrate empowerment and "being able to write your own story".

This June’s limited season of ‘& Juliet’ sees it come to Nevada, where Las Vegas's Reynolds Hall at The Smith Center is proud to feature this up-and-coming jukebox musical on Tuesday 24th June 2025.
