History

The 1904 original play that inspired the musical rendition plunged into complicated themes of boring adult responsibilities versus imaginative childhood dreams. The musical plays out with similar elements while adding enchantment and modern flair.

Iconic actress Mary Martin’s leading performance lends to the plays widespread success. Her gender-bending role as Peter Pan was a testament to progress at the time. The show continued claiming Tonys and a Drama Desk award for over a decade. The 1960 film recording would also enshrine the story and bring the musical to home televisions.
